Day 38: Cactus League record: What does it mean?
Updated: 4:35 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. –What do make of Cactus League records? Not a whole lot. After all, the Rangers, a team that has played in the last two World Series, are 7-16 this spring.
The A’s? They’re 14-5 this spring. So, you know, draw your own conclusions there.
The Padres? They’ve played well the last two or so weeks. There’s a value in that, just not a whole lot. You see teams play like the ’27 Yankees here only to fall flat on their face during the regular season. The opposite holds true as well.
“You want to play well as opposed to not playing well,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “We have been playing well the last 12 days. Our pitchers are throwing well and offensively, we’re doing some good things.”
So you have to dig deeper, go beyond the win-loss record, go beyond the ERA, go beyond the batting average to get a true indicator of how a team and, specifically, a player is doing here. For hitters, that means looking at the quality of the at-bat, the swing, etc.
Hey, it’s another split-squad day for the Padres.
Check back later for more information.
Here’s all the information on today’s games.
* Dodgers (12-8) at Padres (15-11), 1:05 p.m. Peoria Sports Complex
Radio/TV: XX 1700 (Bob Scanlan, Andy Masur, Jerry Coleman).
The lineups: Maybin 8, Venable 9, Headley 5, Alonso 3, Hundley 2, Kotsay 7, Bartlett 6, Cabrera 4, Kelly 1.
* Padres (15-11) at Rangers (7-16), 1:05 p.m. Surprise Ballpark
Radio/TV: None.
The lineups: Hermida 9, Guzman 7, Clark 3, Grandal 0, Gyorko 5, Baker 2, Galvez 4, Parrino 6, Luebke 1.
Updated: 9:45 p.m.
– 2B Orlando Hudson (strained right groin) will play Thursday. He’s also scheduled to play through the weekend. The last game here in Arizona is Sunday.
– 1B/OF Kyle Blanks is “feeling better,” according to Bud Black. Could still be a DL candidate to begin the season.
– RHP Jeff Suppan (strained right triceps) will test his triceps by playing catch today.
– RHP Luke Gregerson was supposed to pitch Monday but was bothered by a back spasm. He’s on the list to pitch against the Rangers today, so we’ll see if the team gives him one more day or not.
– OF Jeremy Hermida has a ligament strain of his left pinky finger. He’s in the lineup against the Rangers.
That’s it for now.
Updated: 4:35 p.m.
– Padres get a split today, as Brad Davis hit a two-run double in the ninth inning as San Diego topped the Dodgers in Peoria, 6-5. The box score for that game can be found here. The Padres fell to the Rangers in Surprise! 10-9. That box score can be found here. A lot of hitting to be had in Surprise, as Jeremy Hermida hit two home runs.
– We’ve got an overview of the Minor Leagues system, something I put together today. Should be an interesting year for teams in the system.
– Nick Hundley had a laser of a throw in the third inning to catch the speedy Dee Gordon tying to steal second base. No time, but I’m betting it’s around 1.9, maybe less.
– Cameron Maybin was 0-for-3 before getting a hard-hit single in his last at-bats. He’s hitting .213 this spring. “Cam can run a little hot and cold at times,” Black said.

Day 37: Bad news for Blanks?
Updated: 5:15 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — Sorry for the delay, but I’m off today, working ahead on a few projects.
I’ll make this brief.
The Padres lost to the Cubs today in Mesa, 2-0. The box score can be found here. Here’s the game story if that floats your boat.
It appears that the nagging left sore left shoulder that Kyle Blanks has been nursing might land him on the DL to start the season. Here’s a link to that story.
Also, Orlando Hudson appears to be on the mend. The team also place Logan Forsythe on the disabled list, which doesn’t come as a surprise.
Also, if you’ve missed anything over the last few days or even the last 37, head here for all the latest (and not-so latest) on the Padres.
Back to the ballpark on Tuesday.

Day 36: Thinning the room (again)
Updated: 3:55 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — We’re on our way toward reaching the 25-man roster for Opening Day. Today the Padres reassigned four players to Minor League camp — outfielder Jaff Decker, infielder Jedd Gyorko and right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas and Matt Palmer. Also, infielder Jeudy Valdez was optioned to Double-A San Antonio.
Note: Valdez was optioned because he’s on the 40-man roster. The other four aren’t.
The Padres now have 41 players in camp, including 10 non-roster invitees.
I asked manager Bud Black today that when the team breaks camp next Sunday if he’ll have his 25-man roster set. He said it doesn’t seem likely. The team, of course, will take some extra players back to San Diego for the two exhibition games against the Royals. A few of those players could travel to get extra looks before the Opening Day roster is set before April 5, when the Padres host the Dodgers at Petco Park.
I think we’ll see a smattering of smaller cuts over the next week as the Padres work to get close to that 25-man roster.
Update: RHP Brad Boxberger has been reassigned to Minor League camp. Roster now at 40.
More later here, so check back for updates.
Here’s the information on today’s game.
D-backs (8-13) at Padres (14-10), 1:05 p.m. Peoria Sports Complex
Radio/TV: XX 1090 (Bob Scanlan, Andy Masur, Jerry Coleman).
The lineup:Maybin 8, Kotsay 9, Headley 5, Guzman 7, Alonso 3, Baker 2, Bartlett 6, Cabrera 4, Moseley 1.
The pitchers:Moseley 6 innings, Wieland 3 and Hinshaw 1.
Updated: 10:15 a.m.
– We mentioned the cuts today above. Again, we’re at 41 players in camp, including 10 non-roster invitees.
– C Nick Hundley gets a day off after catching six innings Saturday. He’s sore right oblique was good yesterday. He’ll be back in tomorrow.
– It looks doubtful that SP Jeff Suppan will be ready to break camp next week. Suppan, in camp on a Minor League deal, has a sore right triceps and has been sidelined a week. Suppan could remain back here in Peoria to rehab the triceps before joining Triple-A Tucson.
– 2B Orlando Hudson and 1B/OF Kyle Blanks = status quo. No word on when we’ll see them, though they’re getting better. There’s no concern on Black’s part that Hudson might start the season on the disabled list. In fact, it hasn’t been discussed.
– A fun note from the Padres victory over the Cubs on Saturday. According to Black, and I can’t verify by the box score, Padres pitchers threw only 96 pitches in that game. Anthony Bass, Micah Owings, Mikolas and Ernesto Frieri pitched in that game.
Updated: 3:55 p.m.
– CF Cameron Maybin was a late scratch. Turns out he’s fine. Bud Black said he’s been playing a lot so he decided to give Maybin a day off.
– C Nick Hundley got seven plate appearances in a Minor League intrasquad game today. He’ll be in the lineup tomorrow.
– SP Dustin Moseley looked good today against the D-backs, getting four double-play balls. Here’s the story.
– Another home run for 1B Matt Clark, giving him three for the spring. He’s also hitting .484. “He continues to swing the bat well,” Black said. “He’s making the most of it.”
– I wrote a story today about OF Mark Kotsay and the role he’ll provide this season. You can read about him here. Also, he had two hits today.
– 1B Yonder Alonso had two hits today, giving him six in his last three games. Careful not to read too much into spring stats, but the quality of his at-bats have been better in the last 10 days.

Day 35: Cabrera or Parrino, who do you like?
Updated: 4:15 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — Happy Saturday from Peoria. Getting ready for (another) split-squad day here, with one team headed to Mesa to face the Cubs with the other staying here to face the same Reds team they faced 16 hours ago.
Oh, quirky schedule, how I love you.
Anyway, I’m staying here in Peoria. All the game details are listed below.
As you’ve probably noticed, one of the few position battles in camp is the one for the backup infield job between Everth Cabrera and Andy Parrino. Both are playing today, both have played a lot recently, especially with second baseman Orlando Hudson down with a strained groin.
Entering play today, Parrino is second on the team with 43 at-bats (hitting .209). Cabrera has 35 at-bats and is hitting .286. I’m not entirely why I mention the offensive numbers because, really, that won’t be the main focus the Padres look at when they decide who makes the 25-man roster for Opening Day.
Remember, you’re not expecting your backup infielder to win games. You just don’t want him to lose them. The Padres will need to rest Jason Bartlett at shortstop on occasion, so Cabrera might have the advantage there. But Parrino has done some very nice things defensively in camp, including this gem from Friday’s game against the Reds.
Manager Bud Black likes what he’s seeing from both players.
“They’re showing a lot of good things,” Black said.
* Reds (9-12-1) at Padres (13-9), Peoria Sports Complex, 1:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: XX 1090 for radio (Ted Leitner, Bob Scanlan).
The lineup: Maybin 8, Kotsay 7, Headley 5, Guzman 3, Hundley 2, Denorfia 9, Bartlett 6, Cabrera 4, Richard 1.
* Padres (13-9) at Cubs (10-12), HoHoKam Park, 1:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: WGN TV.
Day 34: Grandal shines with bat and glove
Updated:2:50 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — There’s no denying catcher Yasmani Grandal’s bat, as the switch-hitter hit a bomb of a home run on Thursday over the batters’ eye in center field in Tucson.
“Legit,” Padres manager Bud Black said.
Grandal, 23, is hitting .346 this spring with one home run and nine RBIs in 26 at-bats. Of course, his bat was considered his best tool that day he came over from the Reds in the Mat Latos trade in December.
But what about his defense?
Grandal has been better than expected in camp, thanks to his hard work (obviously) and the tutelage of Terry Kennedy, Brad Ausmus, John Gibbons and Justin Hatcher.
“It’s going to be a process,” Black said. “There’s some things he needs to continue to work on. But in a short time, he’s done some good work. He’s done a good job.”
Anyway, that’s it for now.
* Reds (9-11-1) at Padres (12-9), Peoria Sports Complex, 7:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: XX 1090 for radio (Ted Leitner, Bob Scanlan). Fox Sports San Diego (uh, check your cable provider).
The lineup: Maybin 8, Kotsay 7, Headley 5, Alonso 3, Venable 9, Baker 2, Cabrera 6, Parrino 4, Volquez 1.
The pitchers: Volquez 5, Thatcher 1, Cashner 1, Brach 1, Boxberger 1.
Updated:2:50 p.m.
– 2B Orlando Hudson (strained right groin) is “truly day-to-day,” said Bud Black. No word on his return.
– 1B/OF Kyle Blanks (sore left shoulder) got a shot to alleviate some of the pain and swelling in his shoulder. He’s feeling better.
– C Nick Hundley (sore right side/oblique) wanted to play Friday but will play Saturday, Black said.
– OF Carlos Quentin is back in camp after having surgery on Monday on his right knee.
– 3B Jedd Gyorko had four hits in the game in Tucson on Thursday. “Aggressive swings, early in the count,” Black said.
– SP Casey Kelly was up in the strike zone on Thursday in Tucson and didn’t throw his breaking ball for strikes. Sounds like the team would like to see him back off on the velocity on his change-up. But Black like Kelly’s velocity and that he picked a base runner off second base.

Day 33: Did you pack your lunch?
Updated: 4:30 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — There was a big bus pulled up alongside the clubhouse when I arrived at the complex this morning — a bus bound for Tucson, where the Padres play a split-squad game against the Rockies today.
This is a makeup game for Sunday’s contest that was rained out.
I saw outfielder Jaff Decker this morning — wearing an Oregon Ducks hat, which made my day — he didn’t look super excited about the prospect of riding 2 1/2-3 hours to Tucson. He wasn’t complaining, mind you. Just looked like he’d rather be playing in Peoria.
A lot of younger players made the trip to Tucson. You’ll see what during Spring Training, where seniority reigns supreme. I mean, look at the lineup. Only James Darnell and Andy Parrino have Major League service time.
But, all of these split-squad games have some benefit — even if it takes three hours to get there. Days like today mean additional playing time, at-bats and innings for players who are trying to make an impression on the staff. Pitchers Alex Hinshaw and Dale Thayer, both impressive as non-roster invitees, are scheduled to pitch today.
Parrino gets a chance to impress manager Bud Black, who went to Tucson — though wisely skipped the bus. Jedd Gyorko, Decker, Matt Clark, all guys in their first big league camp, get more experience. Most of these guys will be moved to Minor League camp at some point, so they’re getting the chance ti impress management while they can.
Some morning notes: Note that since Black has left, we won’t have access to him today.
– 2B Orlando Hudson said he’s feeling good after leaving Wednesday’s game when he re-aggravated his right groin injury. No word on when he’ll return.
– 1B/oF Kyle Blanks has had a sore left shoulder since Sunday. This wasn’t something incident specific, he said. I’ll have a note on that later at Padres.com.
For more details on today’s action, check back.
Here’s the details for today’s game — vs. the Indians here in Peoria and the other game in Tucson against the Rockies.
* Padres (11-8) at Rockies (9-8) at Kino Veterans Stadium, Tucson, 1:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: None, only game in Peoria.
The lineup: Decker 8, Gyorko 5, Darnell 7, Clark 3, Grandal 2, Parrino 6, Galvez 4, Carroll 9, Kelly 1.
* Indians (5-11) at Padres (11-8) at Peoria Sports Complex, 1:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: AM 1700 (Andy Masur, Jerry Coleman, Bob Scanlan).
The lineup: Maybin 8, Venable 9, Headley 5, Guzman 7, Alonso 3, Bartlett 6, Baker 2, Cabrera 4, Luebke 1.
The pitchers:Luebke 5, Street 1, Hinshaw 1, Gregerson 1, Palmer 1 or 2.
Updated: 4:30 p.m.
– Big news today was that Padres CEO Jeff Moorad announced that he’s stepping down. He’ll remain vice chairman with a focus on the Fox Sports San Diego/Padres partnership. I’ll have a story on Padres.com later about it.
– Also, the Padres got a split today, defeating the Rockies in Tucson and losing to the Indians in Peoria. Here’s a link to the box score from the Tucson game and a link to the Peoria game. Padres had 15 hits in that game in Tucson, including four by Jedd Gyorko.
– Good news for pitcher Cory Luebke. He looked good today, getting six strikeouts and allowing one run over five innings. Better still, the changeup that he’s been working hard to refine and get comfortable with? He said he got four or five outs with it when he was behind in the count. I think this is a big development and something that will help him moving forward.
– I’ve got an update on Kyle Blanks and Orlando Hudson. You can find both of them right here.

Day 32: Pity poor Tim Wheeler
Updated 6:40 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — I don’t know much about Tim Wheeler other than he’s one of the Rockies top prospects. I do know that he had a very short at-bat Tuesday against Padres reliever Andrew Cashner, who used 12 pitches to get three strikeouts in the Padres victory over Colorado.
Wheeler saw four of those 12 pitches and actually fouled off a pitch — the only contact the Rockies made against Cashner, who showed not only his 100 mph fastball but a devastating slider and change-up as well. Cashner got Wheeler to swing through a change-up and then chase a slider in the dirt for strike three.
Yet another impressive outing for Cashner, who has had all sorts of success this spring and who doesn’t appear to be a one-trick pony, a pitcher who relies only on his fastball. I think he’s going to be a nice fit in the eighth inning for the Padres.
The Padres, specifically manager Bud Black, likes the three-pitch mix and that he has a repeatable delivery. About the only thing the Padres have worked with him on is shortening his stride a touch. Other than that, he’s as advertised.
As always, we’ll have notes later below.
Anyway, let’s get to details for today’s game against the Dodgers.
Padres (10-8) at Dodgers (9-5) at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, 1:05 p.m.
Radio/TV: AM 1700 (Ted Leitner, Jerry Coleman, Bob Scanlan).
The lineup: Maybin 8, Hudson 4, Guzman 7, Alonso 3, Denorfia 9, Darnell 5, Grandal 2, Cabrera 6, Stauffer 1.
Morning notes:
– As you can see, 2B Orlando Hudson (strained groin) in back in the lineup. He hasn’t played since March 13.
– 1B/OF Kyle Blanks still has a sore left shoulder. He’s day-t0-day, but I wouldn’t expect to see him for a few days.
– Manager Bud Black will accompany the team to Tucson for a split-squad game Thursday. Black spent two springs in Tucson while pitching for the Indians. Sounds like he has a favorite restaurant that he wants to visit, too. Sort of a no-lose deal.
– Black has mentioned LHP Alex Hinshaw the last two days in regards to three sliders he threw past Josh Hamilton of the Rangers. It’s those moments that stick with a manager. I don’t know what it means, but Hinshaw, a lefty who throws in the low-90s, has done some nice things so far in camp. No guarantee, though.
– Black said he liked the uptick in velocity from RP Luke Gregerson on Tuesday and that his slider looked good at times.
Updated 2:45 p.m.
– Well, Orlando Hudson’s first game back since March 13 didn’t go real well. He hit into a double-play in the third inning and apparently re-aggravated his sore right groin. That’s the initial word, though I’m sure we’ll have a better idea later.
Updated 6:40 p.m.
– Not real definitive word on Hudson from Bud Black, though he did say he thinks the strain isn’t as bad as it was when Hudson first suffered the injury. Obviously this is something we’ll follow-up on Thursday.
– Tim Stauffer and Black were very pleased with the right-hander’s performance, six scoreless innings against the Dodgers. Here’s what Stauffer had to say.
– I wrote a story today about pitcher Anthony Bass and how the Padres might use him like they initially did with Cory Luebke last season — first in long relief with an eventual move to the starting rotation.
– I didn’t have room for this Tuesday, but I wrote a separate note today about Nick Hundley’s thoughts about Petco Park. Pretty interesting, honest quotes. Have a look right here.
– All the details and box score from today’s 3-0 victory over the Dodgers.
One more thing, the Padres are now 2-0 when my father-in-law, Leon, has attended games (Tuesday and Wednesday). He’ll got for No. 3 on Thursday. Good luck charm, I tell you!

Day 31: Back in the saddle again
Updated: 4:40 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — Hey friends, back to work today. Was off for the weekend and, of course, the Padres had their only true off-day of the spring on Monday.
I won’t arrive at the facility until later today because there’s a night game against the Rockies at 7:05 p.m. I’ll have the lineups and pitchers this afternoon.
Dustin Moseley gets the start today. We know that much. Moseley should be well rested and very well fed, especially after I saw him and his family having a late breakfast on Monday at the Good Egg.
Update: No, Moseley is not starting. It’s Joe Wieland. See my note below on Moseley.
Anyway, we’re reaching that point in Spring Training where you’ll see the regulars start to get more at-bats and more playing time. The starting pitchers are to the point where they’re stretched out to four innings and in some cases five. Opening Day is two weeks from Thursday.
Wow, where did the time go?
Also, I think the cuts you’ll start seeing will become tougher as we inch closer to breaking camp here on April 1. The team has two exhibition games once we leave Arizona, one at Petco Park and one more at Lake Elsinore, the home of their California League affiliate.
Pretty interesting few days with the announcement that outfielder Carlos Quentin — who was just starting to find his swing — will be out 4-6 weeks after having surgery on his right knee. Here’s the story on him if you missed it.
What does Quentin’s injury mean? Looks like Kyle Blanks has a much better shot to make the 25-man Opening Day roster now. I think we’ll see a lot of Jesus Guzman in left field. Who will hit clean-up? Here’s what Bud Black had to say.
The Padres had their game Sunday in Tucson rained-out and will make it up Thursday with a split-squad affair. Cory Luebke will remain in Peoria to pitch. Those who get the short straws will apparently head to Tucson for work.
I had a chance to attend two panels last weekend at the SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) in Mesa. Here’s my first story from the GM panel that included Doug Melvin (Brewers), Chris Antonetti (Indians) and Jerry Dipoto (Angels). The second panel was on scouting and analytics. Padres assistant GM A.J. Hinch spoke at that one and had some good, candid things to say.
Going back to Friday night, everything that I’ve heard about the Fox Sports SD production was positive. I realize there’s issues with some people receiving this channel and hopefully that will get cleared-up soon. Looking forward to working with the Fox people moving forward.
Rockies (9-7-1) at Padres (9-8), 7:05 p.m. Peoria Sports Complex
Radio: AM 1090 (Ted Leitner, Jerry Coleman, Bob Scanlan).
Lineup: Maybin 8, Venable 9, Headley 5, Alonso 3, Kotsay 7, Bartlett 6, Baker 2, Parrino 4, Wieland 1.
Pitchers: Wieland 4 or 5 innings, Thatcher 1, Cashner 1, Brach 1, Gregerson 1, Mikolas 1.
Afternoon notes:
– I’ve hinted at this on Twitter a few times, but the Padres finally consummated their deal with catcher Nick Hundley. It’s essentially a three-year, $9 million deal through 2014 with a $5 million club option for 2015. It’s a very club-friendly deal but for Hundley, 28, if offers him security — which is nice for such a demanding position that can take a toll. Here’s the link to my story.
– 2B Orlando Hudson wanted to play Tuesday night, but will get one more day to rest his sore groin. Look for him Wednesday.
– OF/1B Kyle Blanks has a sore left shoulder. He’ll need a couple of days.
– Looking for a dark horse for the Opening Day roster? Bud Black has some nice things to say about reliever Dale Thayer (sneaky fastball, decent slider, Major League service time). Don’t get too excited. It’s March 20, still a lot of games left before we break camp.
– Dustin Moseley pitched five innings against a Mariners Minor League team on Tuesday. Black said it’s hard to get work for the 21 pitchers in camp. I also think the team is staying away as best they can from having projected starters face National League West teams from here on out. Remember, the Padres play 16 games in April against NL West foes.

Day 27: Two days off.
Updated: 4:15 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — Hey friends, I’ll be at the SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) analytics convention this weekend and am not sure how much blogging will take place.
That said, here’s some information for the weekend:
Saturday vs. Royals: Luebke, Suppan, Street, Boxberger.
Sunday at Giants: Volquez, Cashner, Thatcher, Frieri, Thayer, Owings.
Sunday at Rockies (in Tucson): Bass, Kelly, Spence, Boxberger, Hinshaw.
If you watch Saturday’s game on Fox Sports San Diego, you’ll see yours truly and Dick Enberg talking about the National League West and the Padres. You, you know, set your DVR’s for that.
– C Nick Hundley has a sore right side. Doesn’t sound like anything too big. Could see him get a few days off (and Monday is an off-day anyway).
– 2B Orlando Hudson (groin) and OF Carlos Quentin (sore right knee) are all progressing along. Could see them get the weekend and Monday off as well.
– RHP Nick Vincent, who sprained his left ankle stepping on a ball in the bullpen Wednesday in Goodyear, has been moved over to Minor League camp. There are now 47 players left in camp.
– The Padres were down 6-0 to the Angels on Friday but came back to win 8-7 thanks in large part to a eight-run seventh inning.

Day 26: Thinning the room
Updated: 7:23 p.m.
PEORIA, Ariz. — As manager Bud Black is apt to saying about camp cuts: “It’s time to thin the room.”
The Padres did just that on Thursday, moving eight players over to the Minor League side: Pitchers Erik Hamren, Juan Pablo Oramas, Robbie Erlin, Jose De Paula, catcher Jason Hagerty, infielder Edinson Rincon and outfielders Rymer Liriano and Blake Tekotte.
No real surprises here. Rincon, Liriano and Tekotte have played well in camp but I think we can all agree that none of the three had a chance to make the Major League roster.
The timing is pretty good, as Minor League games start today. These players will get today off before likely getting in games on the Minor League side on Friday.
That’s it for now. Check back later for results.
Padres (6-7) at Brewers (5-6), 1:05 p.m. Maryvale Ballpark
Radio/TV: XX 1090 (Andy Masur, Bob Scanlan). Tune in at 1 p.m.
The lineups: Decker 8 Guzman 7 Headley 5 Quentin 9 Alonso 3 Bartlett 6 Baker 2 Cabrera 4 Moseley 1.
Morning report:
Updated: 10:53 a.m.
– RHP Nick Vincent, who has looked good in camp, will miss an unspecified amount of time with a left ankle sprain. He stepped on a ball in the bullpen area in Goodyear on Wednesday. He was in a boot and on crutches Thursday on his way to get an X-Ray. As soon as we get the results, we’ll pass that along. “It’s kind of a bummer for Nick,” Padres manager Bud Black said.
– 2B Orlando Hudson isn’t in the lineup today after straining his groin during practice Wednesday morning. Black didn’t sound too concerned about the strain. “He said he’ll be fine,” Black said. Hudson told me early Thursday that “he’s ready to rock and roll.” Whatever that means.
– RHP Andrew Cashner stopped for donuts on the way to the complex Thursday morning and brought in a few boxes for his teammates and the coaches. That made him the most popular guy in the room.
– RHP Dustin Moseley will go four innings today against the Brewers. He’ll be the first Padres pitcher to do so this spring.
– OF Carlos Quentin gets the start in right field for the first time this spring.
Updated: 7:23 p.m.
– Sorry for the late update. The Padres lost to the Brewers today, you can read about it here. Pitcher Dustin Moseley didn’t have the command of his fastball he did last time out but still fared well. He’s been good the last two times out. Not much offense today.
– Sounds like OF Carlos Quentin won’t miss much time with a sore right knee. He was a late scratch on Thursday.
– Good news on RP Nick Vincent. The x-ray on his sprained left ankle came back negative. I wrote about his weird injury today.
– Also, I spent some time this morning talking to RHP Dennis Tankersley, who made his MLB debut with the Padres at age 23 in 2002. Remember him? He’s back in camp on a Minor League deal after a tryout. Pretty interesting guy. You can read about him right here.
