Day 36: Thinning the room (again)

Updated: 3:55 p.m.

PEORIA, Ariz. — We’re on our way toward reaching the 25-man roster for Opening Day. Today the Padres reassigned four players to Minor League camp — outfielder Jaff Decker, infielder Jedd Gyorko and right-handed pitcher Miles Mikolas and Matt Palmer. Also, infielder Jeudy Valdez was optioned to Double-A San Antonio.

Note: Valdez was optioned because he’s on the 40-man roster. The other four aren’t.

The Padres now have 41 players in camp, including 10 non-roster invitees.

I asked manager Bud Black today that when the team breaks camp next Sunday if he’ll have his 25-man roster set. He said it doesn’t seem likely. The team, of course, will take some extra players back to San Diego for the two exhibition games against the Royals. A few of those players could travel to get extra looks before the Opening Day roster is set before April 5, when the Padres host the Dodgers at Petco Park.

I think we’ll see a smattering of smaller cuts over the next week as the Padres work to get close to that 25-man roster.

Update: RHP Brad Boxberger has been reassigned to Minor League camp. Roster now at 40.

More later here, so check back for updates.

Here’s the information on today’s game.

— We mentioned the cuts today above. Again, we’re at 41 players in camp, including 10 non-roster invitees.

— C Nick Hundley gets a day off after catching six innings Saturday. He’s sore right oblique was good yesterday. He’ll be back in tomorrow.

— It looks doubtful that SP Jeff Suppan will be ready to break camp next week. Suppan, in camp on a Minor League deal, has a sore right triceps and has been sidelined a week. Suppan could remain back here in Peoria to rehab the triceps before joining Triple-A Tucson.

— 2B Orlando Hudson and 1B/OF Kyle Blanks = status quo. No word on when we’ll see them, though they’re getting better. There’s no concern on Black’s part that Hudson might start the season on the disabled list. In fact, it hasn’t been discussed.

— A fun note from the Padres victory over the Cubs on Saturday. According to Black, and I can’t verify by the box score, Padres pitchers threw only 96 pitches in that game. Anthony Bass, Micah Owings, Mikolas and Ernesto Frieri pitched in that game.

— CF Cameron Maybin was a late scratch. Turns out he’s fine. Bud Black said he’s been playing a lot so he decided to give Maybin a day off.

— C Nick Hundley got seven plate appearances in a Minor League intrasquad game today. He’ll be in the lineup tomorrow.

— SP Dustin Moseley looked good today against the D-backs, getting four double-play balls. Here’s the story.

— Another home run for 1B Matt Clark, giving him three for the spring. He’s also hitting .484. “He continues to swing the bat well,” Black said. “He’s making the most of it.”

— I wrote a story today about OF Mark Kotsay and the role he’ll provide this season. You can read about him here. Also, he had two hits today.

— 1B Yonder Alonso had two hits today, giving him six in his last three games. Careful not to read too much into spring stats, but the quality of his at-bats have been better in the last 10 days.
