Your Padres news ...
A recap of the Padres’ 6-2 loss to the Rangers yesterday in Surprise! Matt Antonelli had three hits, raising his spring average to .471.
A story on top pitching prospect Simon (pronounced see-Moan) Castro. I think this guy has huge upside and will continue to move fast through the system.
Robbed in the hole …
Third base prospect James Darnell was robbed of a hit on Friday by Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus on a ball hit between second and third. Andrus went deep into the hole, backhanded the ball and threw to second base for a force out. Darnell was able to laugh about it Saturday. “When I saw the ease that Elvis got the ball, I knew I didn’t have a chance,” Darnell said.
Because someone asked …
I mentioned before the story I did on Simon Castro, with the correct pronunciation of his first name (see-Moan). Someone else has asked me about Cory Luebke. It’s pronounced Kore-ee. Just kidding. Luebke is sort of like what you might think: Lube-key. So there you go. If I can be of help in any way, please let me know.
From the training room …
A few things of note: Pitcher Cesar Carrillo, who left Friday’s game with tightness in his right hamstring, will be monitored by the training staff. He’ll be out several days, though it’s not anything too serious. … Scott Hairston (calf bruise) is improving, though there’s no timetable for his return. … Luis Perdomo (sore knee) is getting better, no timetable for his return. Joe Thatcher (shoulder tightness) will throw a live batting practice session today. … And Logan Forsythe (groin) can go through workouts but won’t play today.
A happy return? …
The Padres certainly hope so, as pitcher Mark Worrell, less than 12 months removed from Tommy Jon surgery, throws one inning today against the A’s. Worrell had surgery last March 25 and has been brought along slowly this spring. But he’s made all of his side sessions and will appear in his first Cactus League game today. “He’s worked hard to get back to this point,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “Your happy to see the reward.”
