Your Padres news …
The Padres fall a run short yesterday, nearly rallying from a 8-0 deficit, losing to the Cubs 8-7 at the Peoria Sports Complex. Here’s a few newsy things, notes and random observations I have from the day here.
— I did an interview with Darren Smith at XX 1090 AM today. It’s always fun to talk Padres with Darren. Anyway, shameless plug here. Hope you enjoy it.
Also, Matt Stairs played a little first base today. Looked pretty good, too.
Not-so hot corner …
Chase Headley has been taking a lot of ground balls before games to get himself essentially re-acclimated to third base. It’s a good thing, too. He’s not getting much action during games. Headley told me this morning that he’s gotten two real ground balls in his first four games at third base. “Oh, I tagged someone two days ago,” Headley said. David Eckstein wandered by and said former Angels teammate Troy Glaus once went a whole spring without getting one ground ball hit to him at third base.
From the training room …
Scott Hairston showed up in the clubhouse early Friday on crutches after fouling a ball off of his left calf. He has a deep bruise and the crutches made it easier for him not to put pressure on his calf. Manager Bud Black said later that the crutches would likely be gone Friday and that Hairston could be back in the lineup in a few days, possibly Monday. Again, it will be up to Hairston. Also, pitcher Luis Perdomo, who left Thursday’s game with a sore right knee, is doing better after treatment. Perdomo has what Black called irritation in the joint line in his knee. He’ll likely miss the next 5-6 days. Logan Forsythe was scratched from the lineup on Friday. He’s has a slight groin injury. Fellow prospect James Darnell will take his place.
About those cuts …
Black said Friday that the first cut of camp will come in the next few days. This won’t be a big deal by any means, as it will entail moving Minor League players in camp back over to the Minor League side. These will be players who didn’t have a shot to make the team. That does not mean Black can’t pull a player or two over for reinforcements during games. It’s really all part of the process of getting closer to the 25-man Opening Day roster.
