Peavy and the Cubs … all over again

It should be an interesting day here in Peoria as Padres pitcher Jake Peavy makes his last start before leaving for Florida later today to train with Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. He will throw two innings today against the Cubs, one of the teams Peavy was linked to during the off-season and, depending on what you heard or read, was close to heading to the Windy City.

Peavy talked on the first day of camp about the off-season and hasn’t had to revisit it much to this point. He might have to today, though I don’t get the feeling it bothers him too much. He’s made peace with what happened — or didn’t happen — in the off-season and is moving forward.

Anyway, here’s the lineup for today.

CF, Scott Hairston
2B, David Eckstein
LF, Chase Headley
1B, Kyle Blanks
RF, Will Venable
3B, Travis Denker
C, Nick Hundley
SS, Luis Rodriguez
SP, Jake Peavy (will throw two innings, or 30-35 pitches)

Today’s pitchers: Peavy 2, Wade LeBlanc 2, Justin Hampson, Greg Burke, Arturo Lopez, Edwin Moreno, Ernesto Frieri.

Morning notes: The World Baseball Classic guys have either left camp or will today. Hairston and the Gonzalez brothers have it the easiest, as they’ll drive two hours to Tucson where the Team Mexico training camp is. … Manager Bud Black, who was stuck on the wrist by a bat Friday in Goodyear, said he has no hard feelings toward catcher Eliezer Alfonzo. “I gave him some Vegemite, so we’re even,” Black joked. … Pitcher Mark Prior threw breaking balls in a side session on Saturday, leaving Black encouraged. “When I see guys throwing breaking balls, that’s a good sign for me.” …

Cheers, Corey

Spring Training will have a different feel to it when these guys all leave for the WBC.
