The final stretch

Listen, general manager Kevin Towers and manager Bud Black might already have a good idea of how some of these final roster spots — the bench job, Callix Crabbe and spots in the bullpen — will finally shake out, but they’re not saying, so we’re left to speculate what might happen this week.

Chase Headley’s departure to Minor League camp clears the picture some, as Jim Edmonds, I have to think, begins the season on the disabled list, meaning Paul McAnulty, he who is out of Minor League options, makes the team, as does non-roster invitee Jody Gerut, who will likely start in left field on Opening Day against the Astros.

But what about the bench, and the backup infielder with defensive on the brain, the guy the Padres want for that spot? Oscar Robles or Luis Rodriguez? A little interesting that neither is in the lineup today against the Angels but Crabbe is at third base. Maybe Crabbe is more on the bubble than we have thought?

Here’s today’s lineup for the 1:05 p.m. game in Tempe:

RF Brian Giles
2B Tadahito Iguchi
DH Adrian Gonzalez
1B Tony Clark
CF Jody Gerut
SS Khalil Greene
LF Scott Hairston
C Josh Bard
3B Callix Crabbe
SP Randy Wolf (scheduled to go six innings)

Cheers, Corey

Why does McAnulty get passed over for the starting left field spot by Gerut? I thought P-Mac was having a better spring.

I think the Padres feel that Mac projects better as a fourth OF than Gerut. It’s not just based on who plays the best in spring as there are other factors that the team looks at.

Bard and Barrett are supposed to be sharing the starting catching job, but as far as I’m aware, Barrett has not had a start in almost a week now. Any insight into what’s going on there?

Oops. Let me ammend that, if I may. Barrett did start on Sunday, and, after going 0-2, was relieved by Bard. Other than that, I don’t believe we’ve seen him in several games.

I feel very torn and conflicted: I absolutely adore McAnulty and want him to make it (if not with us than someone else….) and Gerut had an excellent spring… and who can argue with what Hairston has done… But I think Chase Headley is a breakout star waiting to happen, I get the feeling that throwing him into our lineup we kinda go from middle of the road to cream of the crop. It kinda just seems like all of our players are doing great (which is great) and we don’t want to lose any of them (who DOES!) so we option Chase now knowing that we’ll always have him later…

Hawkeye: Barrett has been sick lately, but he should be back in the lineup sooner than later. Also, I think we’ll see Chase sooner than later. They guy can mash and the Padres will find room for him. He just needs a little more seasoning in left.
